Asean Para Games: Malaysia’s badminton team achieves four-gold target

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s badminton team have met their four-gold medal target in the Asean Para Games.

Top seed Madzlan Saibon (pic) delivered the first gold for badminton in the Asean Para Games on Friday.

Madzlan who is one of four para shuttlers under the Podium Programme, defeated Truong Ngoc Binh of Vietnam 21-10, 21-10 to win the men’s singles WH2 (impairment in the lower limbs) final at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

With the win, the 42-year-old, whose leg was amputated from above the knee following a motorcycle accident in 1995, defended the gold last won at the 2015 Singapore Para Games.

Madzlan also won his second gold when he teamed up with Muhd Ikhwan Ramli to beat defending champions Junthong Dumnern-Jakarin Homhaul of Thailand 22-20, 21-19 in the men’s doubles WH1-2 event.

In the SS6 (short stature), Didin Taresoh won a gold for Malaysia when he came out tops in the round robin competition.

In the final round robin match, the 42-year-old school teacher defeated compatriot Muhd Naim Ahmad Halmi 21-1, 24-22.

In the men’s singles SU5 (impairment in the upper limb), Cheah Liek Hou exacted revenge over Suryo Nugroho of Indonesia with a 21-11, 21-15 win to deliver Malaysia’s fourth gold medal.
